If I tell someone that x person is "Gay-free," that kind of comes off as being homophobic. It's like saying some place is "Smoking-free!" You don't want anyone smoking there. If you just say x person is straight, you don't sound so much like a homophobe.
yep, that’s exactly what i’m saying. like idk if you saw it but there was a post going around some time ago that said something like distancing yourself from gay people (sorta like the whole us/them thing) is homophobic – and that’s exactly how i feel about it. saying ‘my character is straight’ feels a lot less othering than 'slash-free’ bc that kinda implies a feeling of 'nope no slash here you got it all wrong nope’.
